Matagi, traditional hunting

Oguni, Nishiokitama District, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan, February 2 2018 - Picture of a ceremony during bear hunting at Shigemi SAITO (68)'s home. Mr SAITO is of the leader of Matagi group in Oguni and helped Ms Hiroko EBIHARA to join the group, as the first Matagi huntress in Oguni.
Oguni is home of about 100 Matagi hunters, along with other Northern Japan (Tohoku) regions. Matagi are traditional winter hunters, hunting mainly dear, bear and snow rabbit.
