Matagi, traditional hunting
Oguni, Nishiokitama District, Yamagata Prefecture, Japan, February 2 2018 - Ms Hiroko EBIHARA (33) and her master Mr Shigemi SAITO (68) train in the mountains of Oguni.. Ms EBIHARA is one of the first women who could join the formerly male-only Matagi circle and the first huntress in Oguni, thanks to Mr SAITO.
Oguni is home of about 100 Matagi hunters, along with other Northern Japan (Tohoku) regions. Matagi are traditional winter hunters, hunting mainly dear, bear and snow rabbit.
